Perhaps it’s the Spinal Tap factor, a reticence or self-consciousness about the potential absurdity of these private moments of drama.Īnd what about sex? The film is a little reticent here too, more about the underground than the velvet, and it leaves the issue of Reed’s own sexuality more or less untouched. Where perhaps it falls down is on the ordinary, gossipy sense of how exactly the band members could have fallen out so badly, and how painful that surely must have been. This is a great documentary about people who are serious about music and serious also about art, and what it means to live as an artist. How great to see Jonathan Richman (a madeleine for my own record-buying past) talk about what would happen at a Velvet Underground gig at the end of a song: the crashing finality of silence for which no chord progression had prepared the audience. This was angry, confrontational, nerve-frazzling rock. ![]() But the Velvet Underground were not producing laidback hippy whale music: as drummer Moe Tucker points out, they hated hippies and (capriciously) hated Frank Zappa on that basis. Haynes gives a very good sense of what I can only call the transcendental quality of the Velvet Underground’s music, inspired as it initially was by the aesthetic of drones, sustained chords and chord variations, a sense that continuous immersion in the music will (at some stage) facilitate an epiphany that cannot be coerced or guaranteed. ![]() There are two particular moments when the magic kicks in: “Hey Mr Rain,” an old outtake stretched to 16 minutes, and “Coyote,” the one new song of the reunion – a mysterious mini-epic and a rare John Cale and Lou Reed co-write.Haynes presents his movie in a more or less continuous split screen, juxtaposing a collage of thematically relevant found-object images, archival material about the band, and talking-head interviews with surviving band members and admirers or sometimes Warhol’s daringly static portrait-movie images of people like Reed who had to just stare into the camera lens. In 1993 the original quartet staged a reunion tour that imploded before it ever got to the US, but their double-live album Live MCMXCIII gave a fascinating glimpse of what might have been. Eno was referring to the countless up-and-coming groups who were, at that time, either covering the Velvets’ songs or copping their sound, but there’s a deeper meaning to his observation as well: The Velvet Underground’s music dared you to start thinking differently to approach your life in a more creative way. Our hats are forever off to Brian Eno, who observed in a 1982 interview that The Velvet Underground’s debut album only sold 30,000 records, but everybody who bought one started a band. ![]()

![]() ![]() Because of his Kyoutoryu training, he considers himself to be just Togame’s “sword” and doesn’t really have any goals or desires of his own. Shichika starts out pretty bland, which is actually the point of his character. Luckily, that’s one of the best parts of the show. One thing that Katanagatari understands is that episodic stories usually need strong characters to keep everything connected, which makes Shichika and Togame’s relationship crucial. Some were so well written that I wish they had gotten more screentime. Even with only one episode of development, the episodic characters usually feel fully developed and are able to have a complete arc. An overarching story develops as the show goes on, but the individual episode stories are usually self contained and involve characters that only appear in that episode, similar to Cowboy Bebop. In addition to letting the show cover more plot in each episode, this makes every episode feel like a self contained story with a firm beginning, middle and end. The only reason that works is because the episodes are all 50 minutes long and cover one novel each. This may sound like a lot, but all of that plot and more is covered in the first episode. Her efforts to do this are questionable, but Shichika claims to have fallen in love with her and decides to go with her as her sword. When she arrives at the island, she discovers that Mutsue is dead, but his son Shichika is still alive and also a master of Kyoutouryu, so Togame decides to get his help by making him fall in love with her. 20 years later, Togame, a self-proclaimed “strategemist” for the government, seeks Mutsue’s help in recovering 12 legendary swords for the Shogunate. As the name suggests, Kyoutoryu doesn’t use any weapons and involves using one’s own body as a “sword.” In spite of his service to the Shogunate, Mutsue and his family were banished to an island because the shogun feared his power. 20 years prior to the story, there was a rebellion against the Shogunate that was put down by Yasuri Mutsue, master of the “ultimate sword style” Kyoutoryu (no sword style). Katanagatari is set in an alternate version of feudal Japan ruled by the fictional Owari Shogunate. What isn’t as well known is Katanagatari, an anime based on a series of novels by Isin that, despite the name, has nothing to do with Monogatari. The anime adaptation of his Monogatari series was a hit in both Japan and the US and has had multiple seasons and movies and is still ongoing. Nisio Isin has become a pretty big name in the anime industry in recent years. ![]() ![]() ![]() The show airs on Wednesday night on Comedy Central. ![]() In addition to the main Yankerville’s puppet citizens, the show features guest characters voiced by celebrities such as Will Forte, Tiffany Haddish, Will Forte, Chelsea Peretti, Dave Chappelle, Natasha Leggero, Kevin Nealon, Aubrey Plaza, and Kathy Griffin. Legitimate pricing strategies, such as penetration pricing, involve temporarily lowering prices to gain a foothold in the market. While this is the goal of predatory pricing, it's hard to prove intent and easy for companies using predatory pricing to claim some other reason for the low prices. The difficulty when enforcing these laws comes from the fact that, in order to be illegal, the goal of the pricing must be to force competitors out of the market. To that end, most forms of predatory pricing are illegal. Antitrust laws are designed to preserve market competition and minimize monopoly power. Because predatory pricing is designed to drive other competitors out of the market, it is typically viewed as an attempt to gain an illegal monopoly. The United States has a long history of legislation against monopolistic behavior. Is predatory pricing illegal in the U.S.? However, with market dynamics restored, remaining competitors and new entrants once again become a threat. The goal is to reduce competition enough that the profit made during this phase makes up for the predation phase's losses. Stage 2: Recoupment - When the competition has been sufficiently thinned, the predation phase ends and prices are raised back to normal levels. With this strategy, large companies can often force smaller competitors out completely and prevent new competition from getting a foothold. This will put the competition in a position where they must choose to take losses themselves or exit the market. Stage 1: Predation - As long as a company can afford initial losses, they can lower their prices beyond what's financially stable.Instead, a company engaging in predatory pricing will break the strategy into two separate phases: one that damages the competition and another that takes advantage of the weakened competitive field. With enough capital to sustain predatory pricing, a company can end up with a monopoly on the market for a lengthy period of time.īecause predatory pricing relies on pricing products low enough to force other competitors out of the market, it is not a long-term pricing strategy. The company engaging in predatory pricing must take a loss during the predatory phase, but later raises prices when the competition is thinned. By setting prices below costs, other suppliers are unable to compete and have no choice but to exit the market.
